Are you trying to keep certain apps on your iPhone private—like Messages, Photos, or Instagram? While iPhone doesn’t offer a one-click app lock like Android, there are clever workarounds using built-in features like Screen Time, Guided Access, and even Shortcuts. Here’s how to lock individual apps on your iPhone easily.
1. Use Screen Time to Lock Apps
Apple’s Screen Time lets you set time limits on apps, which can effectively lock them with a passcode.
Steps:
- Open Settings > Screen Time
- Tap App Limits > Add Limit
- Select the app(s) you want to lock
- Tap Next, then set a limit to 1 minute
- Enable Block at End of Limit
- Go back to Screen Time and tap Use Screen Time Passcode (if not already enabled)
Now, after 1 minute of daily usage, the app will require the Screen Time passcode to open.

2. Use Guided Access (Lock One App Temporarily)
Guided Access keeps your iPhone locked to a single app, great for when you’re handing your phone to someone.
Steps:
- Go to Settings > Accessibility > Guided Access
- Turn it on and tap Passcode Settings to set a code
- Open the app you want to lock
- Triple-click the Side/Home button
- Tap Start to begin Guided Access
To exit, triple-click again and enter your passcode.

3. Lock Apps Using Shortcuts Automation (for Touch/Face ID Prompt)
You can create an automation that locks apps using Face ID or Passcode. It’s not foolproof but adds an extra layer.
Steps:
- Open Shortcuts app > go to Automation
- Tap + > Create Personal Automation
- Select App > Choose the app(s) > tap Next
- Add action: “Lock Screen”
- Tap Next and turn off Ask Before Running
Now, every time the app is opened, your iPhone will lock, forcing Face ID or Passcode unlock.
4. Use Third-Party Apps? (Not Always Possible)
Unlike Android, Apple doesn’t allow third-party apps to lock other apps system-wide. Be cautious if an app claims to offer full iOS app lock—it’s likely limited or misleading unless jailbroken (which we don’t recommend).
While iPhones don’t yet support locking apps natively like Android, Screen Time and Guided Access offer smart ways to control access. Try the best method for your situation and protect your digital privacy.
