Depth of field — frequently asked questions
What is depth of field?
The zone in front of and behind your focus point that appears acceptably sharp. It's controlled by aperture, focal length, subject distance, and sensor size — f/1.8 gives a thin, blurry-background DoF; f/11 keeps much more in focus.
How is it calculated?
From the hyperfocal distance H = f²/(N×c) + f (focal length f, f-number N, circle of confusion c). Near limit: s(H−f)/(H+s−2f); far limit: s(H−f)/(H−s). This page does it instantly as you type.
What is hyperfocal distance?
The focus distance that maximises DoF: focus there and everything from half that distance to infinity is acceptably sharp — the landscape photographer's trick, shown live above.
What is the circle of confusion?
The largest blur spot the eye still sees as a sharp point in a standard print — about 0.030 mm on full frame, 0.020 mm on APS-C, 0.015 mm on Micro Four Thirds. The sensor selector applies the right value.
Why does sensor size change DoF?
Smaller sensors use shorter focal lengths for the same framing, and shorter lenses have inherently deeper DoF — that's why phones keep everything sharp while full-frame blurs backgrounds easily.
How do I get maximum background blur?
Wide aperture (small f-number), longer focal length, get closer to the subject, and put distance between subject and background. Watch the total DoF thin out as you try it above.
How do I get everything sharp for a landscape?
Stop down to f/8–f/11 and focus at the hyperfocal distance shown. Avoid f/22 — diffraction starts softening the whole frame.
Is DoF split equally around the focus point?
Rarely — at normal distances roughly ⅓ falls in front and ⅔ behind. The split approaches 50/50 in macro and becomes extremely back-heavy near the hyperfocal distance. The exact split is shown above.
