How do I find out when a photo was taken?

Drop it here. If the file still carries its metadata, the exact original date and time are read from EXIF DateTimeOriginal and shown instantly, along with the digitized and modified dates. Everything runs in your browser; the photo is never uploaded.

Taken vs digitized vs modified — what's the difference?

Taken is when the shutter fired. Digitized is when the image became a file — the same for digital cameras, but the scan date for scans. Modified updates whenever the file is re-saved, so a later modified date means editing or exporting happened after capture.

Is the time in my timezone?

EXIF dates use the camera's local clock, historically without a timezone. Newer phones and cameras also write an OffsetTimeOriginal (like +05:30), shown here when present — otherwise treat the time as camera-local.

Why does my photo show no date?

It was probably downloaded from a social network (they strip metadata), it's a screenshot, or the data was removed while editing. Only an original file straight from the camera carries the date.

Can the date be wrong?

Yes — it's only as accurate as the camera's clock. Wrong settings, un-updated timezones after travel, and dead clock batteries all produce wrong dates; scans carry the scan date. Wrong dates can be corrected.

How do I fix a wrong date?

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The date is read entirely in your browser, on your own device — never sent to a server, stored, or shared.

Does it work with WhatsApp or Instagram photos?

Usually not — those platforms strip metadata, including the date taken. The file's system dates then only show when it was downloaded. Ask the sender for the original file instead.

Does it work with HEIC and RAW?

Yes — HEIC and TIFF-based RAW files carry the same date fields, and they're read here. The preview may not display for those formats, but the dates are still extracted.
