Photo privacy checker — frequently asked questions
What can a photo reveal about me?
An original photo can carry the exact GPS coordinates of where it was taken (often your home or workplace), the phone or camera model — sometimes with a unique serial number — the precise date and time, your name in owner/copyright fields, and the software you edit with. This checker shows all of it at a glance, with a risk rating.
Is my photo uploaded when I check it?
No. Your photo is analysed entirely in your browser, on your own device. It's never sent to a server, stored, or shared — this page makes no network requests at all. Once loaded, it even works offline.
Can someone really find my home from a photo?
If the original file still contains GPS metadata and was taken at home — yes. The embedded coordinates are typically accurate to a few metres, enough to identify a specific house on a map. That's why location is flagged as the highest risk here.
Which apps strip metadata, and which keep it?
Instagram, Facebook, X and WhatsApp photo mode strip most metadata when you post. But email, AirDrop, cloud-drive links, Slack, Discord, forums, marketplaces, and WhatsApp document mode usually pass the original file through untouched — location included. The risk is in sharing original files.
What does the risk rating mean?
High: the photo reveals where it was taken, or contains identifiers like a serial number or your name. Medium: it identifies your device and when the photo was taken, but not where. Low: only harmless technical settings remain. Clean: no personal metadata found at all.
Can a photo identify my specific device?
Photos record the camera or phone model, and some cameras write a unique serial number into every file. Multiple photos with the same serial can be linked to one person — even across anonymous accounts. Serial numbers and owner names are flagged as high-risk identifiers.
How do I remove this data before sharing?
Use the free EXIF remover on this site — it strips everything losslessly, in your browser. On iPhone and iPad, the EXIF Viewer by Fluntro app removes metadata — including GPS — from one photo or your whole library at once.
Do screenshots contain personal metadata?
Usually very little. Screenshots capture the screen, not the camera, so they carry no camera data and normally no GPS. Photos downloaded from social networks are typically stripped too — this checker will simply report such files as clean or low risk.
Are timestamps a privacy risk?
On their own, modest. But across many photos they can reveal your routine — when you leave home, where you spend weekends. Combined with location they build a detailed pattern of your life, which is why the checker reports them.
Is this photo privacy checker free?
Yes — completely free, no account, no upload. For removing and editing metadata on iPhone and iPad — including in bulk — the EXIF Viewer by Fluntro app is a one-time purchase.
Private by design
This tool was built so your photos never have to leave your device. Here's exactly what that means for your data.
Nothing is uploaded
Your photo is opened and read entirely inside your own browser. It is never sent to a server, stored, or shared — once this page has loaded, it even works with your connection switched off.
No account, no tracking
There is no sign-up, no advertising cookies, and no analytics watching what you do here. The only thing saved on your device is your light or dark theme preference.
Your location stays yours
If a photo contains GPS coordinates, they are shown only to you, on your screen. We never see them, and any map link opens only if you choose to click it.
Nothing to collect
Because no personal data leaves your device, there is nothing for us to collect, log, or process. The full details are in our Privacy Policy.
Metadata is read from your file exactly as it was saved and is shown “as is.” It can be missing, altered, or inaccurate — for example, timestamps depend on the camera's clock and GPS can be approximate — so please don't rely on it as proof for legal, forensic, insurance, or safety decisions. This tool is provided free and without warranty; see our Terms & Disclaimer for the details.
