Is this photo edited — frequently asked questions
How can I tell if a photo has been edited?
Drop it here — the metadata is analysed for editing traces: software tags left by tools like Photoshop or Lightroom, a modified date later than the capture date, and missing camera fields. A strong indicator, though not absolute proof.
Can this detect AI-generated images?
It detects AI markers that generators write into metadata — including the industry-standard IPTC DigitalSourceType tag used by DALL-E and Adobe Firefly, and software tags naming a generator. Many AI images have markers stripped, so a clean result doesn't guarantee a real photo.
Is a metadata check proof a photo is real or fake?
No. Metadata is evidence, not proof — it can be removed or forged. A file with camera fields, matching dates, and no software traces is consistent with an unedited original. For high-stakes verification, combine this with pixel forensics and source checking.
What editing traces does it look for?
Software tags (Photoshop, Lightroom, GIMP, Snapseed…), a modification date later than the date taken, AI-generation markers, and missing camera information. Each finding is shown as an evidence card with an explanation.
Does cropping or resizing count as editing?
Usually yes, in metadata terms — most tools that crop, resize, or export write their software tag and update the modification date, which this checker reports. Simply viewing or copying a file changes nothing.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The analysis runs entirely in your browser, on your own device. The photo is never sent to a server, stored, or shared.
Why does a screenshot show as unverifiable?
Screenshots and social-media downloads carry little or no metadata, so there's nothing to analyse — the checker says so honestly instead of guessing. Only an original file carries the evidence this tool reads.
What is the IPTC DigitalSourceType tag?
The industry-standard field declaring how an image was created. The value trainedAlgorithmicMedia means AI-generated. Responsible AI tools write it; this checker reads it.
